You are moving

A move quietly resets three things at once: your local hazards, your insurance, and everyone's copy of the emergency plan.

Do first

Today

  1. 1Confirm coverage starts on the day you take possession, with no gap between policies.
  2. 2Photograph valuables before they are packed. It is the easiest home inventory you will ever make.
  3. 3Find out which hazards are common at the new address: flood, wildfire, quake, storm, heat.

This week

  1. 1Redo the family emergency plan with the new meeting point and new exits.
  2. 2Locate the water shutoff, electrical panel, and gas shutoff and show one other person.
  3. 3Update address on insurance, benefits, banks, and any medical providers.

Next 30 days

This month

  1. 1Rebuild the housing reserve for the new monthly cost, which is rarely the same as the old one.
  2. 2Meet two neighbors and swap contact details. Proximity is the fastest help in an emergency.
  3. 3Move the kit and documents into their new home, and tell everyone where they live.

Common traps

  • A one-day insurance gap on moving day.
  • New hazards the old plan never covered.
  • An emergency plan that still names the old address.
